About The EBONY Collection

EBONY Magazine is pleased to share exclusive art reproductions from one of the most extensive and compelling collections of artwork by Black artists in the United States. Since 1971, Johnson Publishing Company has been dedicated to acquiring riveting art compositions for exhibition throughout the company's historic headquarters in Chicago, Illinois.

Each thought-provoking and beautifully moving compositions have been carefully selected to create the ever-expanding Johnson Publishing Company art collection. The complete collection consists of more than 200 original paintings, sculptures, lithographs and drawings, many of which were created for the company by some of the world's finest Black artists. The artwork represents a wide range of colors, textures, styles and mediums, all of which come together to create an extremely poignant anthology.

John H. Johnson, the late founder and chairman of Johnson Publishing Company began the collection as a rich representation of achievements in Black artistry and as a bold statement of the company's cultural commitment to the community.   Johnson Publishing Company President & CEO Linda Johnson Rice continues this important endeavor with an extremely discerning eye toward preservation, introducing the collection to an expanded audience through reproduction and the ongoing acquisition of important works.

Our ancestors whisper to us in the stillness...
Charles White Collection

"I look to the life of my people as the fountainhead of challenging themes and monumental concepts. I strive to create an image that all mankind can personally relate to and see his dreams and ideals mirrored with hope and dignity." - Charles White, Negro Digest 1963.

"My work takes shape around images and ideas that are centered within the vertex of a black life experience. A nitty-gritty ghetto experience - resulting in contradictory emotions. Anguish - hope-love-despair-happiness-faith-lack of faith- dreams." - Charles White, EBONY Magazine 1970
