CHICAGO - Mira Lowe, former managing editor of Jet magazine, has been appointed editor in chief of the world's No. 1 Black newsweekly. In this newly created position, Lowe will oversee all aspects of the magazine's editorial content, staffing and evolving direction on both print and digital platforms.

"Mira is bright and well-respected throughout the industry and has a tremendous sense of news judgment," said Anne Sempowski Ward, president and COO of Johnson Publishing Company, parent company of J et magazine. "Under her leadership, we will build on J et 's strengths and take the magazine from delivering the most important relevant news to our readers in the current weekly print layout to adding a daily and even hourly component."

Lowe's distinguished journalism career expands more than 20 years in the areas of management, editing, writing and production. Prior to joining Johnson Publishing in 2007, Lowe was the associate editor for recruitment at Newsday, on Long Island, N.Y. She was directly responsible for recruitment and hiring; staff development and training; and directing internship programs. The award-winning journalist served as the director of the paper's Minority Editorial Training Program (METPRO), which trained journalists of color interested in pursuing an editing career.

Lowe also oversaw LI Life, a Sunday lifestyle section, in which she brought fresh inspiration to one of the paper's most popular features. She joined Newsday in 1989 as a copy editor and over the years became a supervisory editor on the news, business and features desks. Lowe, who holds a B.A. in Television and Radio from Brooklyn College and a M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University, was the recipient of the 1999 Publisher's Award for Editing.

She has also taught journalism courses at Columbia University and York College in New York, and has been a guest speaker on diversity and recruitment issues at various colleges and conferences. In addition, she is the co-author of Heart and Soul: A Marriage of Love, Faith and Journalism , a monograph published by the World Journalism Institute.

"I am honored by this appointment and gladly accept the challenge of leading a magazine that is known for its legacy and service to a vast African-American audience," said Lowe. "With new and interactive features in print and online, Jet looks forward to engaging readers for many more years to come."

Additionally, Lowe and her team will offer readers a behind-the-scenes view of Jet on Twitter. You can follow Lowe and the Jet editorial staff at twitter.com/jetmagazine.
