Simeon Booker, 88, Retires From JET Magazine

Reception Held for Magazine´s Longest-Serving Editor

One of the industry´s veteran African-American journalists, Simeon Booker, 88, will retire from his post as Washington Bureau Chief for JET Magazine. In honor of his 53 years of service, a reception will be held Tuesday, Jan. 23 at the National Press Club, 529 14th St., Grand Ballroom, Washington, D.C., at 6 p.m. (EDT).

Most noted for his history-making coverage of the controversial Emmett Till trial, Booker has also covered every U.S. presidential election since Dwight D. Eisenhower. As a Neiman fellow, Booker has garnered numerous professional awards, including a Newspaper Guild Award, a Wilkie Award and the National Press Club´s coveted Fourth Estate Award for lifetime contributions to journalism.

Linda Johnson Rice, president and CEO, Johnson Publishing Company, Inc., takes great pride in celebrating Booker´s nearly 60-year career in journalism. "Despite being harassed, threatened and even arrested....Simeon has always been an optimist when searching for the truth. He has been an invaluable asset to the company and to my family," she said.

JET Magazine, the No. 1 African-American newsweekly in the world, was first published in November 1951. More than 9 million weekly readers rely on the publication for its timely and relevant reporting from an informed, Black perspective. Its weekly frequency, scope of coverage, audience reach and penetration combine to make it the world´s most widely read, Black-oriented newsweekly. JET Magazine, founded by the late entrepreneur John H. Johnson, is a division of Johnson Publishing Company where Linda Johnson Rice is president and CEO and Eunice W. Johnson is secretary and treasurer.

Media note: Media are invited to film B-roll of the reception and tributes. Interviews are also available.
